    Introduction to Firearms:  This course is meant for those who first want to know more about firearms before doing the Competency course. This course is also great for groups, families, couples, women, children or any team building event and birthdays. This is also fun and educational.

    Introduction to Defensive shooting:  Being a gun owner is not enough for any defensive situation. This course is meant for new and “rusty” gun owners. Your Competency course is a foundation to build on your safe gun handling skills. This course is designed to educate the gun owner about handguns that are best for personal defense situation and how to use it efficiently. Its goal is to help you quickly develop fundamental skills that you can apply in the worst case scenario defensive shooting situation. The course program features a variety of specialty drills and training methods.

  • Back To Basics Firearm Training Academy provides training, competency tests and accreditations to all new, potential and rusty gun owners. Sports shooting training for beginner to advance tactical level is available. Security specific training, competency tests and accreditations are available to all new and existing armed security officers. Owned and operated by Mervin Kannemeyer, a former member of the South African Navy and South African Police.

    Potential gun owner needs to successfully complete the following Unit standards:

    • Unit standard 117705: Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000 (Legal Test and entry level)
    • Unit standard 119649: Handle and use of a Handgun
    • Unit standard 119650: Handle and use of a Self-loading Rifle or Carbine
    • Unit standard 119651: Handle and use a Manually-operated Rifle or Carbine
    • Unit standard 119652: Handle and use a Shotgun:
